COMEDY AT THE CASTRO
From the team that brings you Gay Day @ Great America, in association with the Producers of FRESH @ Ruby Skye, comes a new concert series – COMEDY AT THE CASTRO – kicking off on Saturday, September 13th, 2008 starring Alec Mapa & Shann Carr. Performing LIVE in San Francisco’s historic CASTRO THEATER, this unique comic duo will show you why they’re both superstars of Film, TV, stage, and the gay comedy circuit.

Hometown boy made good, actor, comedian, writer ALEC MAPA aka "America's Gaysian Sweetheart" has a starring role on Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, and the host of LOGO's "TransAmerican Lovestory" Alec dishes the celebrity dish and tells you why love, marriage, sex and mother-in-laws are fodder for funny. Following the success of his latest big screen role in You Don't Mess with the Zohan, Alec is one of the hottest comedians in the US today and is excited to be back on his home turf to play one of the most beautiful and historically significant gay venues in the country.

Shann Carr - Since 2000 Shann has been the sole lesbian entertainer on over 20 Atlantis cruises. “That’s right 2000 gay men… and me…on a boat!” She knows her gay men and they love her. She has also headlined for Dinah Shore, IML, and the LOGO Network. Watch for her grand finale when she impersonates people on the dance floor. These include “The couple that's been together too long,” “a drag queen” and “the person whom you can tell would be good in bed!”

This event will also help to raise awareness and funds for the Matthew Sheppard Foundation of which Alec Mapa is an active Board Member. The Matthew Shepard Foundation was founded by Dennis and Judy Shepard in memory of their 21 year-old son, Matthew, who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming in October 1998. Created to honor Matthew in a manner that was appropriate to his dreams, beliefs and aspirations, the Foundation seeks to “Replace Hate with Understanding, Compassion & Acceptance” through its varied education, outreach and advocacy programs. SEPT 22 A NIGHT WITH CHAZZ PALMINTERI
Join us for a night with Chazz Palminteri to welcome the national tour of his hit show, A BRONX TALE, playing at San Francisco's Golden Gate Theatre September 23 to October 19. To celebrate Palminteri's arrival in San Francisco the Castro Theatre will be screening Bullets Over Broadway, written and directed by Woody Allen and scored Palminteri an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1995.

After the screening we will host a Question & Answer session with Chazz Palminteri and there will also be an opportunity for audience members to win tickets to see A BRONX TALE live on stage. A BRONX TALE was first mounted off Broadway in 1989 and helped establish Palminteri as a writer and actor with a distinct voice. In A BRONX TALE, Palminteri brings 18 characters to vivid life, depicting a rough childhood on Bronx streets populated by a cast of friends and enemies. 8:00pm: Deathbowl To Downtown
Directors Coan "Buddy" Nichols and Rick Charnoski will introduce the screening!
Along with San Francisco and Barcelona, New York is arguably the modern street skating city, both in reality and image. Because of the unique background, experience and perspective of the film's creators and the decision to "cast" the city of New York as one of the main characters, Deathbowl to Downtown promises to be an unprecedented, seminal film. Like Rick and Buddy's other work, Deathbowl to Downtown goes deeper than 'just' skating to combine documentary with an incisive and artful exploration of skateboarding and its culture. On one level it's about street skating, but also an anthropological overview of skating's epochal shift from the parks and pools of the 70's, to ramp skating in the 80's, to the street ascendancy of the 1990's as seen from a New York-centric perspective. With interviews covering the oldest school originators to the newest school up steppers, comprehensive and much of it never-before-seen video footage, and present-day film shot by Nichols and Charnoski, 'Deathbowl to Downtown' addresses broader issues: How changes in urban planning and design affected skating (and vice versa), the unexpected late 20th century shift of cities from places normal citizens feared to tread, to tourist destinations, and the parallels between the modern history of American cities and skateboarding. That is, the way New York, and skateboarders, went from being ignored and reviled through 70's and 80's to being accepted and celebrated. An entertaining, eye opening, thought provoking take on why the action on New York's dirty, grimy, and hectic streets represents skateboarding to millions of skaters and non-skaters worldwide. -Jocko Weyland
